Occupational Health

Nursing Consultation

Optimal occupational health services should be part of every employer’s business plan. They are essential to ensure employee well-being, safer work conditions and control of business cost drivers.

An Occupational Health Nursing Consultant from the N.C. Division of Public Health is available for occupational health (OH) consultative services to nurses, safety personnel and other employer representatives. The consultant can provide helpful recommendations on the setup, delivery and enhancement of occupational health services. Examples include:

  • Design of a new occupational health program
  • Orientation of new nursing personnel or others that may be managing OH services
  • Help with recruitment of nurses, other health care providers, occupational health services vendors and equipment suppliers
  • Program/policy templates, guidelines, "how to’s"
  • Audits to determine if the correct programs are in place to respond to company or regulatory requirements

Who can request: Nurses or any industry representative

Consultation process:

  • The consultant will evaluate the request.
  • The consultant will provide technical advice, tools, or best practice recommendations via email and telephone. Onsite visits can be scheduled based on the type of request, and will be accompanied by a report summarizing the visit and recommendations.
  • Your feedback is important to maintain the quality of our service. An evaluation form is sent within 48 hours of conclusion of the service.
  • This program does not provide direct services (e.g. clinical care, spirometry, immunizations and so on).
  • This program gives priority to new occupational health nurses, nurses not affiliated with the state professional association (NCAOHN), small business, local government and high risk industry.
